Cat

Quiet feet and a long memory for tea glasses. The cat climbs, balances on wires and slips under cars, and no table in the neighbourhood is safe from one soft paw.

For a few seconds, nothing you do makes a sound.

True facts about the real animal

• Cats twist in mid-air and land on their feet. Scientists call it the righting reflex.
• Whiskers pick up tiny movements of air and help a cat judge gaps in the dark.
• Ancient Egyptians honoured cats and linked them to the goddess Bastet.
